SUMMARY:Glass Blowing: the oven is hot!
DESCRIPTION:Katie Plunkard is the owner of Ghost Pepper Glass\, a glass blowing studio in Austin\, TX. \nKatie has been blowing glass since 2006 but she became fascinated with glass much earlier when she saw glass artisans working on the island of Malta at the age of 11. After finding a public glassmaking studio years later in her home town of Chicago\, she tried her hand at making a cup and was instantly hooked. With a background in both sculptural work and functional tableware\, Katie enjoys blurring the lines between decorative art and functional craft while also trying to imitate patterns found in textile work wherever possible.

SUMMARY:Emily Platt founder of Shiny Elephants
DESCRIPTION:We will be hearing from Emily Platt\, founder of Shiny Elephants. Shiny Elephants is a product design studio located in Houston\, Texas\, founded in 2020\, by industrial designer\, Emily Platt. We provide meaningful collections of tabletop products. Our first season will focus on textiles and paper goods for dining and entertaining. The name “Shiny Elephants” is inspired by Emily’s grandmother\, who had a penchant for elephants and traveled the world collecting elephant artwork that she bequeathed to Emily in her passing. The elephants remind Emily of the rich diversity of culture\, people\, and vision that permeates the globe — each elephant a tiny expression of how different individuals from different backgrounds can interpret and represent a singular concept in a unique artistic way. The way that these pieces make her feel is akin to the feeling she hopes to inspire with her designs.

SUMMARY:The Scient of Clutter and Why It Sucks Your Life Away
DESCRIPTION:Clutter represents itself as the stack of mail that always seems piled on the kitchen counter\, the many unread emails clogging up the inbox\, or the ancient spices that never seem to leave the cupboard.  No matter how “together” we appear in life we all have an area that is subconsciously a burden to us.  The Science of Clutter and Why it Sucks Your Life Away will help you understand why these piles accumulate and how you can “hack” your brain to prohibit them from forming in the future.
